Alberto Carvalho Becomes LAUSD’s New Superintendent

Alberto Carvalho is the new superintendent of LAUSD. Carvalho will go to LA from the Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Since the year 2008, he had been serving as the superintendent at the Miami public school district.

Carvalho got many awards when at the Miami-Dade County Public Schools, which include the National Association for Bilingual Education Superintendent of the Year. For your information, Carvalho is a native of Florida.

According to Carvalho, serving as the superintendent of the Miami public school district was a privilege in his life. He stated that he dedicated his career over the past three decades to the kids of the diverse community in Miami. He is looking forward to bringing the same passion, commitment and compassion to the families and students in Los Angeles.

The opening for the new LAUSD Superintendent role came after Austin Beutner resigned from the same position earlier this year. Since then, Megan K. Reilly acted as superintendent pro tem for the Los Angeles Unified School District. Board President of LAUSD Kelly Gonez thanked the temporary superintendent for how she led the District during a challenging period. In that period, LAUSD did the following with Reilly at the helm.

  • Oversaw the full return of students and faculty to in-person education
  • Dealt with the appearance of the coronavirus Delta strain
  • Put a vaccination requirement into practice for employees
  • Overcame never-seen-before challenges as LAUSD kept responding to the coronavirus epidemic and its impact

On December 14, 2021, LAUSD will finalize a vote on the contract with Carvalho.
